So according to the NaNoWriMo website, a novel with a cover is 60% more likely to win. With a statement like that, how could I not add a cover?
I’ve been intrigued by multiple posts from self publishers praising cover design services. Like any service, there are ranging in quality vs price points and time line. I’ve looked through a few of the galleries and thought to myself, “I think I could do that.”
So here’s my first attempt. What do you think? Would you pick this book up if you passed by it at the bookstore?
Brushing off my design skills has been fun/painful, but I am enjoying the creative outlet. I was considering a post that would show the different photos used for this cover compilation, is that something that you readers might be interested in?
I’m struggling to address you, the reader, directly, because I’m petrified that no one will answer these questions, and I’ll feel like the left out kid at the park. But embracing a fear creates a strength, so I am gonna just go with it!

I love it!! The layout is perfect. What program/website do you use? The first thing I do when I start a new story is create the cover, for some reason it just spurs me on to write faster and get it done :) So one thing I would change on your cover is the purple outline on the words, and change ‘of’ & ‘the’ to white. Also you could always add a very slight blue filter to the background, it will contrast more nicely with the sun that way, and it looks a little murky otherwise. (I’m just basing this advice on this article I read the other day, I wish I could re-find the link). Oh and one last thing (don’t hate me) maybe change the lettering at the top to a different, say cleaner font? Or maybe no words up the top at all? Though if you get rid of the writing it might be too much of a gap… I wouldn’t change a single thing layout wise. I can’t really talk though, my covers are far from perfect. I really struggle with finding good background images so that my words stand out, but you seem to have an eye for that! I usually just find the one image, play with the filter, and whack some words on top lol. Anyway keep up the good work!! Would definintely like to see more :)

Thanks, Millie! I actually used Photoshop to create this version, and will probably eventually flesh it out with InDesign. I really appreciate you taking the time to break down your observations and explain your perspective, I will definitely be taking your critique into consideration for version 2! I was struggling with a concept for the cover, but after looking through pictures on pixabay.com, I found plenty of inspiration to mess around with. Thank you again for your kind feedback. :)

I love pixabay!!! I make all of my blog covers using images from that site 😊 I had a feeling you were using photoshop – I’m so jealous! I was wondering how you managed all the layers 😊

Oh I don’t mind at all! :) I just use canva.com nowadays for pretty much everything. They have some awesome free templates & images, but I usually use the $1 images and occasionally the $1 templates (you only have to pay for them when you’re done and happy with the design, then you have 24 hours to make any changes before the license expires). But I used to have Photoshop, so I often find canva.com a bit restricting on what you can do, but it’s still pretty good and it’s really easy to make a lovely cover in a short amount of time

Wow! I haven’t heard of that site, I’m going to check it out. I have a background in graphic design so I get control happy, which makes photoshop wonderful – but I like the sound of templates and images. Sometimes starting with more than just a blank page is less overwhelming and just as exciting. Thank you for all your wonderful information, Millie!

Loving the cover! I decided to just put up the painting on my blog, because I have no idea where this is going or how to you know, ‘frame’ what’s coming out. Hahah.

Hey, all that matters is that we are now 60% more likely to win, right? lol. It does kinda feel like counting my chickens before the hatch making the cover before the story is complete, but in a way, I guess it’s a snapshot of where the journey begins…at least that’s what we’ll say for now!

The cover is beautiful!!! I can tell you worked very hard on it, just like your writing. It would definitely catch my eye, and I am excited to read the story behind it.
